Alright, I decided to make my own thread containing some of my stuff. I usually like to do character designs, but on the side I try to do sigs/banners. I haven't done that many sigs/banners because I feel that I'm incompetent with Photoshop (I still find coloring with it to be difficult...but then again I'm never happy with how I color with any sort of medium).
http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/5699/logo2small.png
[ Sigs/Banners/Avatars ] *These are all about half a year old with the exception of the sig with Yui
I (http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/6210/guytearsig.jpg) - Guy and Tear from Tales of the Abyss
II (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5176/princexmiakisbanner2cop.jpg) - The Prince and Miakis from Suikoden V
III (http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/1379/kinobanner.jpg) - Kino from Kino's Journey
IV (http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/2714/yuki2.jpg) - Yuki Nagato from the Suzumiya Haruhi series (probably the best avatar/icon I made. I use this one on the MaeTeam forums XD)
V (http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/566/anjiesigcopy.jpg) - Another one of Yuki (I used this signature on the forums for my high school's anime club...you can tell I abused that star brush XD)
VI (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1940/caramelslicesig2copy.jpg) - This is the sig I made for me to use here. It features Yui Hirasawa from K-On! I like the look of this sig compared to the Yuki one because it feels cleaner. The sigs I'll make in the future might go in the same direction - simpler and cleaner
VII (http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1699/eleniakwitchsig3fr.jpg) - This is my signature for the VGmp3 forums. I'm a big Wild Arms fan, and Lilka Eleniak is my favorite Wild Arms character.

[ Drawings - Character Designs ]
Most of these can be found at my old deviantArt page (http://jeli.deviantart.com); however, I'll try to post some of them here too:
Original Character I (http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4826/sogarya2.jpg)
Original Character II (http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/732/sogkyen.jpg)
These two characters have bios that can be found on my old deviantArt page. Looking back at it now, I'd like to try and re-color them. I colored them with Photoshop, but I used the trackpad on my laptop - no mouse, no tablet
Original Character III (http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6626/rpcharacteratreyabyjeli.jpg) - This character is one of my RP characters. She uses tonfas.
Latest design that I put up. Part of a personal project I have going on.

Alright so I'll show something I started working on in 3d. It's for my Hardsurface and Organic Modeling class. We have to model a character in ZBrush. It's a really fun program. I decided to take a shot at Frog from Chrono Trigger. So far I'm liking how the head's turning out.

So the last time I played with clay was probably in elementary school with Play-dough (I think that's how you spell it XD). I was surprised that I managed to actually make something that resembled a human face. The only thing I'm not too happy with is the nose XD This is still a work in progress. I've gotta add some more wood filler in some of the smaller cracks then I can start painting.

You certainly have talent, definitely with hand drawn but also in Photoshop.

Did you say you were in an art program at school?

Did you say you were in an art program at school?
Well right now I'm currently attending college at an art school. All of these were done before I started college (with the exception of my latest sig), so it was mostly self-taught and just me messing with Photoshop.

I'm almost at the end of my third quarter at art school, and all of the classes I've taken so far haven't really affected much of my Photoshop knowledge/skills because most of the classes I've taken were like the basic fundamental drawing classes and 3d modeling classes. If anything, what I've learned so far is a better understanding of the human anatomy as well as how to go for more dynamic poses. I've also learned basics of 3d modeling with a program called Autodesk 3ds Max. In future quarters I'll be learning more about 3d animation and so on and some digital painting.

Awesome! I took a technical course in 3D Animation. I don't really use those skills anymore unfortunately. The program we used was Alias (now AutoDesk) Maya, but I have used 3D Studio Max before.

I expect a more detailed class in 3D would include Photoshop techniques for texturing your models.

Yeah, that'll probably come around in the future quarters. I haven't touched Maya yet. So far the classes I've taken have only dealt with 3ds Max. The final for my 3d Modeling Principles class made me excited though - we had to build a model of a human. Once we learned that we basically learned how to make a 3d model out of any character we created. I might try to model one of my characters over my short summer break.

Educational purposes includes practise, and you can post your images wherever you want, as long as you don't start making money off of them.

I was considering a career, yes, but it is so hard to find anything in the Canadian prairies so I focused on my other passion, website development.

Wow. How long have you been into website development? It interested me when I was in middle school and during my early high school years, but the most that I know is just a few HTML stuff that I figured out in order to really customize my Myspace page (and I don't think that even counts XD). I wanna take the time to learn because I hope to create an online portfolio.

Heh, ya... among web developers we think of MySpace as the worst thing to hit the web.

I have been working with web dev professionally for about four years now. As for a portfolio of your own, there is software which will not require you to learn anything about HTML. I'll be happy to give more information if you'd like.

*looks down to see Shuukei latched onto one of her legs and Matches for Mikey latched onto the other*

._.

It's nothing really. I just try out whatever comes to my head ^^;

Recently, however, I haven't been too happy with my stuff, especially after my 4th quarter review at school. I understand that living in the west means that trying to get into the video game/animation industry requires me to follow a certain standard here - and that standard is not Japanese animation.

The advisors/chairmen talked to my class and said that despite a good number of us passing the review, they wanted us to stay away from the Japanese animation style. After that, I was talking with some friends who were several quarters ahead of me. They said that they were talking with one of the chairmen who did the review and he felt that this quarter's 4th quarter review was a disappointment.

caramelslice
06-08-2009, 11:15 PM
Yeah...you're right. I don't want to abandon my style. I just want to continue to improve on it more.

I dunno, a lot of people nowadays separate Eastern animation and Western animation - I sometimes wonder if they forget that way back then, animation in both regions were influencing each other; in fact, I believe they still do. I mean, Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animation series, but you could tell that it was influenced by Eastern animation.

I love role-playing video games, and a majority of them originate from Japan, so the artwork has the Japanese animation look; however, I realize that with Western video games they tend to push more towards the realistic look. What I want to do is somehow keep that realistic look, but at the same time keep that Japanese animation look - kinda like what guys like Gez Fry and Range Murata do.

*edit: Updated the first page with some more old stuff. I don't have easy access to a scanner. The only way for me to scan stuff is at school, and I'm usually busy with school work to remember to scan some of my new stuff, so for now I'll just be updating with old stuff.

Updated! I was messing around with Photoshop today trying to color another character I created. After a while I decided to take a break from that and I ended up coming up with a logo idea for TSG. What I did was make a clock and inserted it on what's supposed to look like a controller for some video game console. It's just an idea I was messing around with.

Haha, well it's my first time using ZBrush, and I really like it over 3d Max. And yes, I think it's like working with clay. If you're going to use it, it's best to use it with a tablet. You have different brushes to give the sculpting different effects, and the tablet sensitivity works with the program. For the head I used the standard brush. For his little cat-fish-looking things I used the snake brush (or some brush name that had the word "snake" in it).

My teacher kinda showed us how to navigate through the program and some of the quick keys. After that he told us to spend a day messing around with the program, and from there we could start doing our character.

lol, I wasn't trying to hide it. I initially thought everyone checked my first post, but I think I was wrong XD

Posted some updates, mostly from my sculpting class. I should explain the procedure:

First, we had to create a wireframe for the sculpture. The wireframe was nailed into plywood. After creating the wireframe we had to stuff the chest and head areas with heavy duty aluminum foil. The next step was to apply the clay and then sculpt. Those were the simple directions. How you got your details was all based on your knowledge of anatomy. Once the sculpting was finished, you were now ready to bake it. Our teacher's method was to preheat an oven at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. After that, we had to lower the temperature to 175 and bake the sculpture for 3 hours, checking it every 30 minutes. I made the mistake of actually opening the oven to check on my sculpture every 30 minutes, which was apparently not recommended, and is probably why my guy came out with some cracks. If you had cracks, you could either put more clay over it and hand bake it with a heat gun or use wood filler. I went with the wood filler because I don't have a heat gun, nor do I plan on buying a heat gun. All that's left is to paint it. I'm excited. And after this project, we have to do a full-body sculpture :D

What we had to do for our midterm was do a 30-second animation. My animation turned out to be about 50 seconds. It's basically a practice on lip syncing. I think the beginning might be kind of off, but it looks fine on flash...might've had something to do when I exported it.

Updated! The latest addition is my first assignment from my Material & Lighting class. The teacher gave us a model of an anubis head, and our homework was to make it look like four different materials: marble, glass, metal, and a material of our choice (I chose jade). We used 3d Studio Max, and all we were allowed to do was manipulate lighting and the material editor (no actual textures though). We also had to use reference pictures, so I'll post up the reference pictures in a bit.

Updated again! In tonight's Material & Lighting class, we had to turn in a scene that we had to light and texture. The original model was actually the model used for the oval office in the Simpson's movie (my teacher worked on that movie). What we had to do was pick a theme for our version of the office. Since I've been playing a lot of Demon's Souls recently, the theme I chose for my lighting and texturing of the office was loosely based on Demon's Souls.

So finals week just ended for me. Here's my final project for Material & Lighting. In addition to lighting and texturing a scene we had to model it ourselves first. We had to base our scene off a real place. I just did a google search for European courtyards, and this was one of the results. I was given the opportunity to change the lighting to make it more dramatic, and here is the result:

This is the first assignment for my concept art class from several weeks back. We had to design our own tree. I'll probably revisit this design at some point.
