i just thought this would be interesting. my vote for Guitarist would easily be Eddie Van Halen, redefined what people thought was even possible on a guitar (see: "Eruption" by Van Halen) as for bassist, im not as sure. a good mention would be Flea, but that's just me. discuss.

well that because he couldn't afford a left handed guitar at the time because it was alot more expensive then but then it became his trademark

anyone who is serious about playing Lefty with a Right-handed guitar could do it if they wanted too..

I don't base my opinion on who is the best guitarist strictly on skill. I tend to base it off of whether they are artistically groundbreaking (for the time) and how much impact they had on the world.

Therefore this one is easy for me.

My picks rhyme with Saul PicCartme and Pawn Lemon.

I wonder who can decipher it

Hmm, I wonder, would those be two members of some group with a name for a play on an insect and musical term?

For guitar it has to be Tony Iommi, his fingertips got cut off early in his career, and he still managed to become a legend. Tony Iommi is often credited for creating the genre of music known as heavy metal. And has kept Black Sabbath alive over the years even after the firing of Ozzy Osborne. As for his musical talent, I'll just let this video do all the talking.

yeah he's a good one too, but i don't have to think everyone in Rush is the greatest people ever at what they play. there are plenty of other drummers out there of worthy mention.

For guitarist I would have to go with either Jimi Hendrix (I know I know, call me a conformist) or Stevie Ray Vaughn...

I have to say Hendrix is amazing. (im a left-handed guitarist as well)
but the GREATEST guitarist is Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Paul McCartney and David Cook are left-handed as well.

Swift

I would have to say, either Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) or Max Warne and Mitch Prax (Anti Idol).

I'm not a Rush fanboi like Ninboy, but theres no denying that Geddy Lee is an astounding bassiest. He may not be the best but he is for sure above and beyond a lot of other players.

As for my picks:

Guitar:
(Recent) John 5, well versed in several styles of music and great at all of them.
(Legend) I'm going to agree with whoever said Tonny Iommi, Due to his need to tune down his sound was so much darker and heavier then a lot of other music at the time. Did they invent heavy metal? well thats up to debate, but regardless there sound was still unique.

Bass:
(Recent) Les Claypool, the sounds Les can produce with a Bass are mind numbing, very heavy on the slapping and popping though.
(Legend) Going to have to go with John Entwistle, just check out any of his bass solos :o

Drummer:
(Recent) Joey Jordanson or Travis Barker i guess, Not really a whole lot of drummers I've listened to recently that blew my mind. Travis is hard hitting and works with a super small Kit, where as Joey has a huge kit but manages to use it all to great effect.
(Legend) John Bonham hands down, and I'm not that big of a zeppelin fan. Just pick a Zeppelin song, listen to it, and then realize that Bonham never used a double kick.

and that is my 2 cents, I'm sure if you ask me again later i'll have changed my mind.

I've read through the entire thread and I've come to the conclusion that you're all grossly mistaken.

Best guitarist ever? Miyavi.

That's it. That is the undeniable truth. Mods, please close this thread now. It's reached its conclusion. And that conclusion is

Miyavi.

And Yoshiki for drums.

Anyone who disagrees with my dogmatic opinion on this matter is dumb and most likely smelly as well.

I have some varied opinions.

Best guitarist: Paul masvidal. Paul has recorded many amazing albums such as focus and traced in air(both by cynic) as well as his amazing work with side projects Aeon Spoke and Portal. Paul also recorded "Human" by death and substituted as a live guitarist for death for a few years.

My favorite virtuoso on the guitar would definitely be Joe Satriani. If you watch a live show some of the amazing improv solo's he does on stage are mind blowing. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAalYg53V30

He just turned a 5 and a half minute song into a 10 and a half minute song and it still sounds awesome. 4:45-7:30 pure improvisation genius. Take in mind 5:54 when he plays a guitar solo with his teeth.

As far as bassists go i dont know very much. Although i would vouch for justin chanselllor of tool(spelling??) or sean melone(again spelling) of cynic. Listen to the bass solo in textures for sean's talent and listen to any of the bass lines in tool, namely schism and the pot.

EDIT: After my friend showed me some flea bass solos, Flea by far is one of the best i have ever seen

Drummer has to go to neal peart. My mind was blown when my dad showed me a drum solo by neal when i was 11. Another great drummer is sean reinert who has all of the accomplishments i listed for paul, except for touring with death he never did that.

My favourite guitarist would have to be Slash, I can remember listening to some of his solo's and I thought to myself man this guy is awesome, and I still think so to this day.
