There is one thing that will happen to every living person in the world and that is...

ha ha nothing will happen. So relax all you 2012 believers! The end of the world will come when the planet's core over heats essentially killing us all, or when the planet Earth drifts too far from the sun and there are no heat sources available, or when the sun simply explodes and we are swallowed by it's remains...but that'll take billions and billions of years to occur.

I don't believe in any of this 2012 nonsense. I mean just because the Mayans were too lazy to keep writing their calendar means that we're all gonna die? Why should we listen to the prophecies of some ancient civilization who basically just disappeared from the earth over night? Doesn't make any sense to me.

In 2012, caramelslice will be doing free lance stuff to continue to help pay the rent for the apartment she and some friends have lived in since they moved out of school-sponsored housing at the end of the Summer '09 quarter.

No I don't know what'll happen. The future is filled with so much uncertainty. But I'm certain that we'll all be going about our daily business in 2012.

well in all seriousness this time (giggle, I can't ever be that serious)
the thing that the Maya's stated wasn't really that the world would end, as most people misinterpret it. They predicted the end of an "era" which a lot of people seem to mistake as the end of the world. But even the Maya's were just a little optimistic as every "doomsday" scenario has it's silver lining and so did theres (think) my mom once told me that they predicted that whatever change would come a new age (as local said) would prosper. GOOO BANANA!!!!

My brother has a theory, and his I believe makes sense. He believes that something will happen in 2012, that future generations will look back on.

Like, people look back on the 50's, and they see the cold war. He believes that 2012 will hold some sort of historic event, that everyone in the future will remember the 2010 century as.

2012 is just another doomsday scare like Y2K. If anything does happen, we should live our lives out on the course of this new era. If nothing does happen, then all this hype is for nothing and we will live out lives as if nothing happened. It really doesn't matter one way or the other, because we can do nothing to stop either scenario. I personally believe nothing is going to happen, but that is just my opinion. I kind of like Kmmgreen5's idea, though I doubt it. (it would be cool if it did happen ^_^ I'd be left on earth, but what the hey, it's a post-apocalyptic world after all!)

This isn't possible because the only sort of limitation is the 32-bit unix system...which would cause problems in or around the year 2038 A.D...but since we have 64-bit systems, this problem is pretty much solved. The year 292,277,026,596 A.D is when the 64-bit unix will start to have problems. It's just up to people and programmers to upgrade to 64bit before 2038 because 32-bit software will be affected as well...<_<

So I set my computer clock to December 31 2012 and nothing happened so we are good on that front.

The best part about this 2012 thing is that it has brought in so many crazy conspiracy theory people that all have new things to add on what is going to happen. As it is now The end of the myan cycle takes place, a Babylonian planet named Nibiru sent by the gods is going to hit earth and nock it off its access or at least reverse our magnetic poll, and then a whole bunch of craziness with new testament end times, Christian nephilims, angels, something to do with Ligers and maybe big-foot. I am thinking its only a matter of time before some scientologists throw there own 2 cents into the mix for some more laughs.

Anyways I am looking forward to it for sure, grab your popccorn.

Why would wanting to see a movie make one a "nub nub". You go to see movies for entertainment, which is all that movie is for. A dramatization of what some people believe will happen, simple as that. It's like this Orphan movie controversy.

So anyways, I thought I might add to the conversation. So I really have to disagree and thinking the world is going to end. Now I heard about all this shenanegins with the Calender ending on December 12th 2012 or what ever but if you think about it we been through so much of this <censored> (Lol I didn't swear) if you think about it. Like for example, world was suppose to end in 1997 or w/e, Y2K and for some reason it was suppose to end in 2006 but did it end? No. There will be an end of the world I just think its not even close in our time or even my children's time.

Thats just my 2 cents on the subject.

tiamat was a planet before the earth was around (actually, you could say it WAS the earth sorta) then nibiru(planet x lol) came along and smashed into it and destroyed it, most of it became the asteroid belt i believe but a chunk became the earth. they say if it is real, it's due for a come around

I do believe when Tyler was commentating during the FF Marathon, he was talking with the other speedgamers about this same topic. [If anyone else recalls on that] They had said that something always happens when the last year digits are 12. Ex: 1712, 1812, 1912. I also remembered Tyler and them saying that the Titanic sunk in 1912...
Something might happen, but the world ending or an apocalypse doesn't exactly seem too likely.

It was a sad misinterpretation used to impose fear and doubt into everyone, which is why 2012 the movie will make a lot of money. The most hilarious thing is, is that they base it that the "ancient mayans predicted the world would end on this day."

Well, this isn't true at all for several reasons. One, it's the end of the cycle and the end of an era in Mayan times, and the beginning of a new one. It only applies to Mayan beliefs and not to anyone else.

Secondly, the Mayan civilization collapsed a very long time ago, over 1,000 years. There are still very few descendants alive, most likely, but not enough to be considered a civilization. So in that, their era is over, and their prophecy can no longer be fulfilled.

Thirdly, even if the Mayans really DID predict the end of the world, they couldn't predict the collapse of their very own civilization. How is it possible for them to predict our doom but not their own?

That is all.

In the year 2012 we will be electing a new president of the United States. Or perhaps we will keep our current one. I wouldn't know, Nostradamus, and the Mayan calender forgot to tell me those details.

Also in 2012 there will be a treaty signed at the United Nations which will give supreme power to an elected leader of the United Nations, one that will be elected by the world leaders. Also, the world will be split into 10 sections where each new region will have a representative at the UN elected by the nations that are in that region. In this time there will be one world government. Later that year the currency will change to a one world currency which will be printed with images that represent the UN and the new world government.

I know this because I built a time machine. xD

Truthfully the way I see it, is it's unlikely that anything truly monumental will happen. However, on the unlikely chance that it does I would personally welcome an end to humanity. If this is going to happen there is nothing we can do about it so you might as well embrace it. Humanity has developed this desire to protect it'self. All things come to an end, even us. But we hold on to the idea that perhaps before there is a great calamity that will wipe out our species that we reach the stars and live forever.

To be honest, I'd be honored to be part of the last generation of humans. Seeing the apocalypse that will end our species will be epic enough to bring my life to an acceptable completion. I'd die with the rest, and our work here will be done. It can be perceived as a happy ending since all the problems we ever had will be gone (although we will, too). Of course, I still don't think it's going to happen in 2012. If I had to make a prediction, I'd say either the mid 2300's or the middle of the 30th century.

Maybe after we all die out, an alien race will discover our left behind works. That would be pretty cool, considering wormhole technology is possible.

I'm glad to see someone who understands my point. As for those who would say they don't want to die, what difference will it make? I'm going to assume that you don't believe in an after life. So, then without a heaven or hell, why would death scare you? If there is nothing after then you won't know the difference. It would drive a man nuts to worry about his death.
As Nico said, it would be an honor to be the last generation. It would be the greatest of all deaths anyone can have regardless of age.

I'm a little confused here. I know you aren't talking to me, because I didn't say I don't want to die, but I know that so long as I die by violence I'm going to Valhalla. It's just a little ambiguous though, because we don't know what kind of apocalypse is coming in 2012, and whether or not we'll all die by fire raining from the sky, or quietly in our sleep. It makes a HUGE difference to the Asgardians. :|

I'm not sure what an asgardian is. Yes, indeed a painful death is not one to look forward to. And there is a difference in how you die. And truthfully nobody wants to die. In fact I'm a bit of a hypocrite when I say you shouldn't fear death. The truth is I fear death above all things. I try and put my mind to peace with it.

To elaborate, many cultures believe in honorable deaths. One honorable death in these cultures would be to die in war battling for your nation. I'm sure there are many others depending on the culture. Some believe the world will end in a great war. But others believe that the world will end in fire (perhaps an asteroid). There is even a theory that when we are aligned with the center of the galaxy we will pass threw a powerful radiation which will destroy most if not all life on the planet. If it were to happen I would hope an pray that it will be painless. But we know that some methods of destruction would only kill off a portion of the planet's population while the rest of humanity dies slowly.

I don't fear death at all, unless I know it will be painful. If I die, then I'm dead. In an eternal sleep. I don't care how far my life went because I wouldn't have another life to remember how far I got in my last one. Do I want to live? I really don't mind. If I'm alive, I'm cool with that, but if I die, I could care less since I'd be dead and have no memory of my life; not to mention I wouldn't have to worry about all the world's problems anymore.

Don't worry about me, I'm not suicidal, I wouldn't do that. When I die is when I die, and I have no control over it.

I saw some of that special on the History Channel today. It's sad and scary to think the world might end in 2012, but really, my end thought was... if all these scientists and people believe this, why isn't anyone doing a thing about it? It just irks me that so many people are willing to basically lay down and die, especially just based upon something we're being told. Maybe the world will end, just because humanity isn't willing to survive. In the face of crisis, people just curl up in a ball and won't fight for their life.

Source: "The world's going to end in 2012."

Fair enough, but what I was getting at is, the Mayan calendar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayan_calendar) does not include leap years.

And, er, furthermore...

The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar forms the basis for a New Age belief, first forecast by José Argüelles, that a cataclysm will take place on or about December 21, 2012, a forecast that mainstream Mayanist scholars consider a misinterpretation, yet is commonly referenced in pop-culture media as the 2012 problem.

For example, Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, notes that "[f]or the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". However, she considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Along the lines of what Nico was saying, I don't really understand the point in worrying over when the world will end or when you'll die. Even if everything will end in 2012, there's (probably) no way it could be avoided, and even then you don't know if you'll die before that. I dunno I guess I hate contemplating the future because I always set myself up for disappointment. I could very well die tonight or tomorrow due to anything, so it's best if I just focus on what I have right now and make the most of it.

Ok I may be talking about a whole different subject but.....

Honestly, I feel stupid. but I'm not 100% sure what that means that it will wobble on it's axis. I think it may complete one full wobble?

Okay, the Mayan calender measures the constellations which are the most visible. The "Age of Aquarius" marks a restart of the astronomical calender. I'm not sure how the Mayans figured out the astronomical cycle, but the way the earth moves on its axis, it will wobble to change the visible constellations over time. So I don't think the earth is going to wobble, but just complete a wobble cycle of sorts?

Correct me if I'm wrong because usually when I say something I'll try and look up information on it so I don't look like an idiot. This time I didn't.

NicoCW
09-27-2009, 09:26 PM
Earth wobbling on its axis? If that were to happen, the weather would go insane and it would look as though the sun is floating around in the sky, depending on how intense it is. It would constantly switch between night and day, and the Ice Caps will probably melt due to the odd climate changes.

Basically, it will look like Earth is headbanging from space.

Wow... had this discussion many times, anyway, there might be a major problem. First, the Mayans did not predict the end of the world, neither a destrucition, they predicted the start of a new Sun-cycle. (a Sun-cycle completes when the Earth is ligned up with the Sun and the center of the galaxy).

People say that ligning up may cause problems, I don't think so. The Moon's gravity is the gravity with the biggest impact here on Earth. What does it cause, weather related things and tide. The Sun's gravity is only 1/24th of the strength of the Moon's (here on Earth) and the center of the galaxy even more less, so what would they cause...? Nothing... (nothing important at least).

Yes, the Earth will finish a wobble, we won't notice it, it just happens.

But... the our biggest concern is the Sun. In 2012 it'll reach a peak of increasing strength of its Solar Flares. These can cause massive damage here on Earth such as; no electricity, no communication. This is were we've to worry about. Anyway, we won't die (some may) but we'll be fine =)

But this can't be related to what the Mayans predicted, it's a coincidence we have trouble cuz of the Solar Flares and they predicted the cycle in the same year.

Shigure71
09-28-2009, 11:07 AM
Isn't it obvious? When the world ends Phils hat will turn time in reverse, so everything will start over, right from the very begining. So there is no reason to worry about the end of the world. Also if this prophecy I just made up doesn't happen who cares if we die? We all die some time or another, no one can live forever. Sure we would LIKE to live has long as we can, but in the end death will come, it always does.

After that the Sun will stop Flaming.(I probaly need to Wiki some of this to refresh my memory >_<)

Another thing. People also thought the World would in end in 06/6/06. It didn't.

NicoCW
09-28-2009, 06:01 PM
Let me explain further. The sun is a small star. A star's life span lasts 10 billion years. Right now, the sun is 4.5 billion years old. In 5.5 billion years, the sun will go through its Red Giant phase, and consume Earth. The sun WILL NOT explode and turn into a black hole. Only big stars do that, and our sun is just a small star. After it's done nomnoming on Earth, it will shrink into a little dwarf star and leave Earth as ball of deep-fried rock. The Moon, however, would've already GTFO'd by then, since the Moon will leave us long before the sun dies.

Few people said the world would end on Y2K. The main concern was that older computers wouldn't be able to switch over to the year 2000, and thus stop functioning correctly. That was all media hype.

Oh just for fun look up "Planet X". Those people are fun, they thought that Planet X would fly close to the earth and flip the earth's polarity in 2001.. and now they think it will happen some other time in the future. Umm I think 2012 but I could be wrong.

There have been many incidents like that, people weren't really aware of that people were stating the world was suppose to end in 1998 and 2006 I am not sure about the details though. Mostly because I was pretty young and my parents kept me sheltered from all these kind of things. Humans have been predicting the end of the world for million of years, why must 2012 be any different from the other ones? And I love it how the media MILKS the crap out of this. Making lottery tickets, and saying the Mayans were the "first" intelligent civilization, thats a bunch of bs. But they did study the stars and space quiet well and some how found out that the sun was going to be in an eclipse with the centre of our galaxy thousands of years before us. And that what the "solar occurrence" is all about.

I think the thing with 2006 was that one day during that year would have the date 06/06/06 or 6/6/6. That number is the number of the beast (devil) in the bible, so people freak out whenever that number pops up. I never knew we were supposed to die in 1998 though.

So I dunno, I guys we'll just have to wait. But I do think that the world is going to end in some absurd fashion, the way were are killing the ozone and the fact that meteorites often pass right near the outer atmosphere of the earth.....

I dunno, kinda scary...but I dont think we have anything to worry about!

You might want to check you facts. Nostradamus didn't predict 2012 as far as I know. His writings are all up to interpretation. You get people who find events to fit his predictions, it's like a fortune cookie..

2012 mostly comes from the Mayan Calender and, we've discussed this already.

As interesting as this stuff is, the general argument against Nostradamus is pretty concrete: his predictions are so generic. It's like if I saying that someone's going to get shot tomorrow; it's going to happen anyway. The big stir over 2012 is that there were multiple sources that claimed it as the end of days. Of course, it's bahookey, but it makes a great setting for video games.

I can't qoute any sources for this, since I don't recall where I heard it or how that source knew, but supposedly there's a group of british scientists working on a way to bounce two electrons off each other, and they're scheduald to begin testing in 2012. Just judgeing by how near impossbile it would be to get two electrons to actually hit, and the consequences of... other... experiments at the atomic/subatomic level... Well, the prospect makes me a tad nervous.

From what I can recall, their goal was to actually force electrons to make contact with each other, not just propell them and contain them. Although I imagine particle accelerators would be used in it somehow. I believe I first heard about this just over a year ago, and it was said to be pretty cutting edge stuff... I'll see if I can find any links to lend this a bit of credibility.

No, they have been trying to smash atoms together for a long time. They have been succeeding for a long time. Seriously do some research. They just happen to be working on the largest particle accelerator ever. Their goal when doing this is to see if they can find evidence of the existence of some particles to understand how the universe was made. It's one big waist of money...

I have been doing quite a bit of research actually, though just since I read this topic and remembered about that, and everything I've found indicates that yes, they do smash atoms, but the atoms don't -actually- touch. They come outrageously close, like 1 millionth the size of an atom away from each other, but their electromagnetic fields don't allow them to hit, to have literally no space between them. And then their fields propell them away from each other, so they did smash or bounce in that sense.

That's what brings about the theory that we never actually touch anything, the only thing we feel is a series of manipulations of the magnetic fields of the atoms that make us up.

If I'm remembering at all correctly, the goal of this research was to overcome those fields completely and have absolutly nothing between two electrons. What that would accomplish, I have no idea, but I do agree with you that all these projects are a huge waist of funding. And since I can't find anything about this particular effort, it would seem it was either abandoned, or entirely fabricated to begin with.

Why do you guys consider it a waste of funding to try to understand the origins of matter? :)

It's not the goal I find wasteful, rather the method. It's billions of dollars to run one of those machines. We may never find any real evidence of the Boson particle or a graviton and other particles they are looking for such as dark matter.

I think Particle Physics theory may be mistaken when they say everything must have a particle including that which creates gravity.

I know that they have found by doing these studies that there are different types of particles which make up mater. These new discoveries disprove E=MC2 because that states that all mater can be transfered to energy and vice versa.. however.. I won't bore you with the details but It's pretty cool to know of the different types of particles that make up an atom. I just don't think it's worth the money.

MSico
11-02-2009, 06:30 PM
I agree it's expensive, but it's the sort of thing I think is awesome while also putting money towards building a giant sciencey machine, which hardly ever happens. They might not find a Boson particle, but they will find something. And they've also found out how to create subatomic black holes, which may end up having incredible practical applications if they can be harnessed. Dark matter and dark energy make up 90%+ of the mass of the universe; finding out more about them may mean much more efficient machines for everyone.

The Gravity particle is important because there's nothing in physics to explain why objects draw themselves to other objects. We can observe gravity at work but we can't explain its method. This is why they still refer to it as The (accepted) Theory of Gravity. If we could isolate a graviton then we can close the book on theories raised hundreds and hundreds of years ago :P
