View Full Version : FreeRice to help end world hunger?

Thank you to the mod that stickied this. :)

This was brought up in the chat before the stream. FreeRice is a site with a free trivia game. The charitable site donates rice to any country that really needs it. The site started in October of 2007, and has become very successful to date. To date, over 80 million grains of rice have been donated.
For those that are skeptical about this, keep in mind they have to get the money somehow to get the rice, so every time the page loads with the trivia question on it, the banner that is displayed is what gets them the funds for this.

The trivia game has several different categories including definitions, math, geography, and chemistry.

The site even allows you to set the options to make it remember how many grains you collected the next time you play. Just go to the options tab, and choose the second option, and click Set Options.

I'm interested to see just how much the community can raise.
You can find the game here (http://www.freerice.com/index.php)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is also a beta version of FreeRice. Someone70 made a group so we can keep track of our totals there instead. (http://beta.freerice.com/content-group/thespeedgamerscommunity)

Please be sure to click the play button for the group so the rice is counted toward the group total. You can find said button at the bottom of your personal profile page (the page that shows up when you sign in).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post your comments/opinions about this. Feel free to post saying how many grains you have collected as well. If you do set the options to make it remember, don't worry about how much you gained from before, just say your new amount so I'll just edit the amount below.

For me, as I'm writing this, I'm up to 18000 grains.

EDIT: I decided to make it a bit competitive and create a high scores table :P
[spoiler=High scores:3g4b536j]CURRENT GRAIN TOTAL: 265,340

Wow, that's cool. If the site really is legitimate, then it's a great way to help people out there without having to donate anything. All you need is your smarts and an internet connection. :P

I tried it out, and I have a measly 200 grains of rice so far.

I'll have to check that out sometime! <3

I'm at 600 :D I know I've seen this site before so I'm probably above 600 but didn't figure out how to save results. Ah well. I WILL BEAT YOUR 18,000!!

Blackduck

I maxed out the amount you can get back during January (the 20th if you must know), but I just thought I'd post the screenshot anyways.

By the way Blackduck, I was able to continue on even after 10,000. Just thought I'd let you know that.

Ah, this site. I remember it.

Back when it first came out, my sister told me about it. I decided to check it out...

And then, since I like doing something else while watching TV, and I was watching TV a whole lot, I managed to get about 30k before I slowly forgot about the site. :|

Maybe I'll have to go back and get it again! :D

Yeah I remember this site too. My senior year of high school was when we brought the school newspaper back, and every time we were done with work with extra time to spare, we'd all just kill time on FreeRice.com

Blackduck

By the way Blackduck, I was able to continue on even after 10,000. Just thought I'd let you know that.

You can keep going, but the counter resets, as you can see in the picture (and I assume you know, since you got further than that).

I don't know if anyone else is having trouble getting their browser to remember their previous amount, but now Google Chrome for me is starting to not save it. So just a heads up to those who use Chrome, you may end up having the same problem.

I tried it out, and made it up to 1,000 grains of rice so far. I'll work on raising that number even higher, later on. :D

EDIT: Just went and raised another 500 grains. I'm doing even numbers so it's easier to keep track of, since it keeps resetting my count every time I close my browser.

Woah! Awesome job everyone! :D I just got out of an evening class, I get back on here to see several more people involved in this, and it's only the first 24 hours of this thread's existence! Keep it up everyone!

It would make things a little easier for me if you were to post a new post altogether rather than editing posts, just in case this topic ends up being pretty popular.

TSG should host a FreeRice marathon. It should be a competition between the entire community to see who can get the highest score.

I've been on this site once or twice before; might go on it again just for the heck of it.

You read my mind =D

I was just thinking we could at least have a community marathon where we get as many members as we can to play this. Maybe we can try to fit four people on one screen, and each person can do a different subject (or we could just do whatever we're best at so we can donate as much rice as we can)

By the way, I got up to 2,000 grains of rice. It's pretty easy to rack up grains quickly when you're pairing element names with their symbols.

Nice job, I'll add you to the high scores right away. I've been trying to mention this the last couple days during the Summer of Zelda streams, but Britt always misses it. Since you two brought it up to make a marathon about this, why not post something in the Marathon suggestions topic?

I was just on FreeRice just now and I noticed something in the corner. A link to a beta version of FreeRice. In this one you can create accounts, form groups, and keep track of totals, either individually or as a group as a whole. If anyone wants to, I can form a group which we can all join in on and we can use that to automatically keep track of our group total.

meowable
08-24-2010, 02:11 PM
I just saw that new FreeRice, clicked it and when I started answering questions my counter had started from 10 grains again. So I decided to go back to the old version where it had my total. My total has now gone and started again. I am so happy I put a screen shot of my 50,000 grains up here.

I like the idea of forming a group, we should try and have the highest amount of rice out of all the groups there. I'm not competitive at all

Ya it's fine :), I have this forum topic to begin with just like cow said anyway. Sorry if I sounded a little... arrogant or anything earlier asking if I could somehow become the group owner, I've just had some stuff going on lately which has caused me a lot of stress : /

But awesome job everyone, 30K grains in one day! We'll make 1M in a month at this rate. Someone70, you should change the goal in the group to like 10M instead, now there's a goal that will take a while. :)

someone70
08-25-2010, 01:48 AM
Well, I guess I can change the goal every time we meet it. Like 1 mil for now and then 5, 20, so on (if we get that far :P).

EDIT: Oh and lookie here. In just one day, we've become the 2nd highest group. I figure holding the #1 spot is a good motivation for us.

EDIT EDIT: Anyone finding that the beta site is bugging out? My totals don't add to the group and it says I have the 4th highest total of rice, which I clearly don't, at 7000.

[spoiler:2uhylr6s]http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/2459/freericeglitch.jpg[/spoiler:2uhylr6s]
Has anyone else encountered glitches? Just curious...

meowable
08-25-2010, 04:12 AM
I haven't had anything like that but when i'm doing answering the questions it says i'm on level 10 of 10 but then my 'highest level' got to 75 yesterday. I don't know if that's a glitch or just because I got a long chain of correct answers.

Edit - I've been getting some glitches now, the levels aren't going up and every time I got a question right it would still say 'you have donated 0 grains', and now when I try to go to Spanish it asks me English Vocabulary questions. It's also saying I have 320 grains in categories that I haven't even played.

I'm still in favor of a FreeRice marathon where people play it for 24 hours, while being encouraged my commentators and games. Maybe even a competition for the most amount of rice raised.

Looks like a lot of the members are busy with school now. The other groups in the top 10 are pushing, and they are sure pushing hard. We are now currently in 6th place. Come on everyone, we gotta get back up and take back our 1st place position! :P Even if it means coming on for like 5 minutes if you can spare it, and get like 500 grains each day, that still adds up.

Yeah, I think most of us are busy with school/work now. Ah well, I'll still try and bring us up on the weekends. Maybe, by some miracle, we can get back up to first place again.

And remember, our goal of 1 million grains of rice is still up there, and it's something we want to achieve!

Well guys this is a really great idea, good work. I'll join and try to get as much as rice as I can.

I also love the idea of a marathon based on this. I think it would need more than freerice, and have some actual games, but I don't know TSG might be able to make it work. I think this really allows for a lot of possibilities with competitions and viewer participation.

Sorry I recently got a job and it's eating away a lot of my time, and it's very exhausting work so I haven't had a lot of time to do this. I have a day off tomorrow though so i'll really push to get our total up :)

KingSimba77
09-07-2010, 10:48 AM
I really hope the makers of FreeRice realize how buggy the beta is, or WAS. They now have just the beta version and they don't have the old version anymore. When I say buggy, I don't mean how slow it is, I understand what they meant in their blog post. What I mean is this, a lot of us already know that sometimes when you answer a bunch of questions correctly, the rice total doesn't seem to go up. The bug is still present for me.

meowable
09-07-2010, 12:15 PM
Really? all the bugs I noticed are gone now, I was really impressed at how quickly the beta went from a really buggy website to what seemed to me to be a smooth running, almost perfect Freerice. I'll keep a lookout though, if you are still getting bugs have you tried sending feedback about it, they seem to check the feedback regularly and act upon any bugs quickly.

KingSimba77
09-07-2010, 01:14 PM
Hmm, never mind, the bug does seem fixed for me now. Now to take back our 1st place position! :P
It still would be nice for them to have the original totals from the old freerice.
In fact, someone already made a suggestion for them to show the original totals, if you guys want this idea as well, would you mind placing a couple votes for it?
http://freerice.uservoice.com/forums/65 ... ?ref=title (http://freerice.uservoice.com/forums/65775-general/suggestions/1036575-in-the-beta-version-totals-the-values-are-differ?ref=title)
EDIT: I just added my own idea for a new subject, Country Flags. If you guys want to vote, here's the link: http://freerice.uservoice.com/forums/65 ... ntry-flags (http://freerice.uservoice.com/forums/65775-general/suggestions/1042853-add-a-subject-for-country-flags)

Ok I just tried to answer some questions to get my rice total up and it took 7 minutes for the next question to load! I read their blog post about the overload on their servers, but that I feel is a bit ridiculous. I tried using a different browser as well and it took just as long. At this rate I won't be able to push our total up very much on my days off. I hope they manage to sort this out relatively soon.

Just some updates on FreeRice.
They have brought back the original version
www.freerice.com (http://www.freerice.com)

Second we are now in 7th place, with the Guyana group fighting to keep their 1st place position now. And as I mentioned earlier, the lag from before seems to have been fixed now, I can get a large amount of rice pretty quickly now.

KingSimba77

Is it just me, or is the beta version of FreeRice back to where it used to be? Every time I reach 190 grains, it doesn't seem to go any higher. I have to log out, and log back in again just so I can get the grains to count towards our total.

Well, it has been back online for a couple days now. One thing though, is it just me, or is the "190 grain" glitch still in existence? Every time I reach 190 grains, I have to log out, and log back in again, otherwise when I answer more questions the counter won't go up.

I feel quite bad I haven't been getting any grains at all recently, i've been so busy with work that I just don't have time. They have upped my hours so most of my free time goes to catching up on sleep. Hopefully when I get used to the longer hours and don't get as tired doing the long shifts I can start getting more grains but for now I will have to put this on hold.

No problem meowable. In a way, I know how you feel because one course I'm taking is taking up quite a bit of my time, a Business Law course. There is a lot of reading for each week, and it doesn't help I have a mild learning disability, so it takes longer for me to process everything.

Besides, right now there's still that "190 grain" glitch that a lot of people are writing about in the feedback section, yet it hasn't been fixed.

Is it just me, or is that "frozen number" glitch back again? This time the magic number seems to be 1000, here I am answering questions, then when I reach 1000 grains, it freezes and won't go any higher. Only way to fix it is to log out and log back in again. Has anyone else had this problem lately?

KingSimba77

You know... they keep saying in their feedback section that they have fixed the "frozen number" glitch, yet it keeps occurring. : /

I just got up to 9110 grains in one sitting... then the number froze again. :s
Maybe the glitch just randomly happens or something... ah well, at least it seems to occur much less frequently at least.

FreeRice made another blog post highlighting some of the lower ranked groups. If we can get more active in this, maybe they'll highlight us again like they did in the first month back in August! Come on guys, even if it's for like 5 minutes every day or every other day or so, every little bit helps! :)

Think of it this way, if we can get our rank back up, that's more potential for FreeRice players to notice our FreeRice group, and more potential for new viewers to the marathons.
More viewers for the marathons -> more donations for the charities! :D

The way the levels work is based on what people answer correctly and incorrectly. This is just the first day for the category, but as time goes on the "easier" flags like France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, United States, etc.... will all be in the earlier levels, and the flags you mentioned along with the "harder" flags will eventually be in the later levels.
