    TSG book club

    The Speed Readers?

...okay the name is a work in progress, but the idea is solid.

So some of you might already know about this but I would like to start a TSG book club. The basic idea is we have a month to read the assigned book then after that time we meet together, possibly through skype, and talk about it.

I have a few books in mind and was thinking about a science fiction/fantasy theme at least to start.

Let me know what you guys think or if you have any book that might be good.

I do need to read more, so I approve of this idea.

I'd also like to suggest Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy to start with, if we're gonna go with a sci-fi/fantasy theme.

    Re: TSG book club

Sci-fi/fantasy is a super broad theme and holds a lot of the famous works we know, and coincidentally the books I also want to read.

I suggest The Time Machine mainly because I've always wanted to read it. I made a list of other possible books both on my "to-read" list and other resources.

    So here's the list:
    [spoiler:2wtfir6f]The Lord of the Rings
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    Ender's Game
    Dune series
A Song of Fire and Ice series
    1984
    Fahrenheit 451
    Brave New World
    American Gods
    Slaughterhouse Five
    Frankenstein
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
    The War of the Worlds
    Contact
    The Road
    20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
    2001: A Space Odyssey
Journey to the Center of the Earth
    I, Robot[/spoiler:2wtfir6f]

    Re: TSG book club

As I said on Twitter, I'm really interested in this! I'd like to suggest Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, perhaps the best book I've ever read. The story takes you through six lives all bound by one soul. A novel a mystery in itself, once you get to the end you realize how each of the six different stories relate together and it is very grand.

There is also a movie with a ton of A-List actors. (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess) The movie further pushes the message of reincarnation by each of the cast members playing multiple roles. At the end of the book there is a lot to talk about so I highly recommend it!

    Re: TSG book club

Cloud Atlas sounds very interesting and I really want to read it but I think for the first month it might be good to go with something a little more introductory to the genre like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Time Machine or Ender's Game. As for when we could start it depends on how quickly people respond to the idea. I'm hoping in a week or two.

Local your list makes me Happy, I have most of those books on my list too.

I'd also be interested in this. I don't currently read much, and don't really have a "to read" list yet. But this past weekend I found myself sitting around rather bored and thinking that I was in need of a new hobby. It may be hard for me to finish a book every month (depending on how many weekends get canibalized by work stuff), but I'd love to give it a try and see how it goes.

I don't have much time to actually physically read either, so I recently subscribed to Audible, Amazon's audiobook service. There are other free and not so free ways to get audiobooks if that method is more convenient for you.

I'm interested. I think Cloud Atlas sounds good, but I'd probably be OK with anything we happen to choose.

I think we should try different themes from time to time to keep things fresh.
As for the first book we do, I don't mind. I own Cloud Atlas already so that would work with me!
